How To: Create custom ringtones for iPhone

This guide is going to show you how to create custom ringtones for your iPhone using GarageBand on OS X. There’s probably ways to do this on Windows, but seeing as I don’t use it, I’ve no idea how.

GarageBand

1) First off you’re obviously going to open up GarageBand, and create a new project.

Use the name that you’ll want your new ringtone to have.

2) Next drag the song that you want to use from iTunes into GarageBand. This will only work as long as it is not a protected track.

Now if you try and create a new ringtone from here, GarageBand will throw a wobbly about the track not being the correct length. That’s what the next step is for….

3) Here you need to create a clip with a max length of 40 seconds. To do this you’ll be needing the ‘cycle’ tool, found in the red circle here:

Click this, and you’ll be given a yellow movable bar at the top of the project. This can be resized and dragged to any point of the track. Hit play and it will cycle whatever you’ve got in the yellow box. This will be your ringtone.

4) Now this is done, simply click share in the menu bar, and then ’send ringtone to iTunes’.

iTunes

1) The ringtone you just created will be dumped into iTunes, in a playlist called, funnily enough, ‘Ringtones’

2) Now just sync as normal, making sure that you have told iTunes to sync ringtones.

3) Select the ringtone in your iPhones settings and job done !
