Winpwn out of beta – Is it needed?
So Winpwn is now out of beta and officially at version 1.0. This is obviously good news if you’re unfortunate enough to be running Windows, and Pwnage Tool is your unlocking/jailbreaking tipple of choice. Unfortunately I find myself all rather underwhelmed . I mean, there’s plenty of ways to be doing the deed these days, and to me Ziphone is still the best (read easiest) option around. And answer me this: this close to the release of the 3G iPhone and the next firmware release, is it really wise to be working on something that might not even work on the new handsets? Perhaps I’m just getting grumpy in my old age, but until I see a 3G iPhone being pwned then I’m not interested.
So there !
However, to stop this post just being a complete rant-athon, here’s some little info about what’s new in 1.0.
- Completely rewritten installer app that adds support for nearly every package (Including Cydia)
- You are now able to remove items from installer
- Change logos without restoring.

I quite like the idea of Winpwn, primarily because I can “cook” a custom rom that includes all my apps. If I ever need to do a hard reset on the phone, I can just reinstall the custom firmware and all my apps are preinstalled.
In theory, Pwnage was supposed to allow the jailbreaking of firmware 2.0 from day one. I’m not sure that’s the case any more though since it seems to be impossible to install the latest betas on a pwned iPhone.
Never used Winpwn so didn’t know you could restore to s state pre-determined by you. That’s actually rather good.
