Not excited about the 3G iPhone. What’s wrong with me?

I‘ve been a little worried of late. Nothing to keep me up at night, but just this little nagging irritation at the back of my mind. You see, we’re edging closer and closer to the impeding announcement, and subsequent release of what should be the ultimate mobile device, iPhone 2. Great you say, what’s the problem? Well, I’m almost ashamed to admit it, but I just don’t find myself getting excited about it!

Allow me to expand on that a little, before you all hunt me down and throw your burning 2.5G iPhones at me.

What are we expecting, or even hoping for when it comes to the 3G release? Obviously the higher speed data connection is number one, closely followed by GPS functionality. A better camera and higher storage capacity has also been mentioned around the internet. Now out of those, let me list which I’m interested in:

Yeah, that’s it.

3G? I’m sat here on my home WiFi connection. I go to the missus’ house, I’m on her WiFi connection. I go to work, I’m on the Cloud WiFi connection. Starting to get the idea?

GPS? I’ve got my TomTom GO sat. nav. in the car. That’s got all the speed (sorry, ‘Safety’) cameras on it, along with all the petrol stations and Little Chefs I’m ever likely to need.

Better camera? I’m not a photographer at the best of times, let alone using a mobile phone. I just don’t use it. Yes I take the odd picture of something I see that makes me giggle, but there’s nothing wrong with the current model’s solution for that.

More storage? I’ve got my 8GB phone full of music, none of which I listen to. It’s there just because I can. What would I do with more space? Fill it with more rubbish I don’t watch or listen to !

Thankfully I’m not alone. Dean Evans over on Techradar feels the same:

Now, I love my iPhone as much as the next recently-converted, non-Mac owning early adopter. It’s a fantastic bit of gear, arguably the best mobile phone I’ve ever owned.

But, even this close to a suggested launch of the 3G version, I find myself underwhelmed by the prospect of the new hardware. Even if it has 32GB of storage and a better camera.

So there I am. I really do not need a 3G iPhone, unless they come up with something I haven’t mentioned already. My current iPhone’s in great condition, so I can’t even use that as an excuse to upgrade if you can call it that.

There you have it. I don’t need a new iPhone. But will I end up getting one? Absolutely !

This is definitely something worth mentioning. I reckon that much of the success behind the current iPhone, and certainly why I bought one, is that it trod the line temptingly between what the gadget lover would consider ‘want’ and ‘need’. I reckon the web browsing, email, and sheer ease-of-use was so miles ahead of the competition at the time, it became a bit of a ‘I NEED one of those’ kind of things. I don’t think these improvements have the same kind of wow-factor that would make all current iPhone owners want to upgrade straight away, but then again, what could they implement that would?

Let other people find the problems and fix all the bugs first. I think I got my existing phone at just the right time :)

Must admit I expected more people telling me I’m mad!

Meh, I’m probably just jealous that I can’t justify an upgrade a month after buying the current one ;)

I think why most of us (globally) are excited is because we just can’t get V1 at the moment, also there’s only one provider in Australia that has Edge support and they’re pretty much priced out of the market. 3G opens up a lot more options here.
