Small icon, big issue?

When a company the size of Google changes something that’s customer-facing, the world notices. Even when the change is as small as a faveicon, someone won’t like it.

In an effort to explain its reason for choosing the icons we now see in our menu bars and iPhones, Marissa Meyer, vice president of Search Products and User Experience has released pictures of icons the company had to choose from.

Mayer also says on the Google Blog:

The reason is that we wanted to develop a set of icons that would scale better to some new platforms like the iPhone and other mobile devices. So the new favicon is one of those, but we’ve also developed a group of logo-based icons that all hang together as a unified set.

Personally I couldn’t care less what icons they use, so long as my Gmail accounts still work, and their search pages point at the-iBlog !

Do you like the new icons?
