It seems everyone these days is using some kind of online storage. Be it for sharing files between a group of people or as destination to keep backups of important files, online storage is coming of age.

There are numerous different companies vying for your business, and even some free options should you not require huge amounts of storage or only upload small-ish files. Amazon offer the S3 solution (explained more by Paul Stamatiou here) and dropcopy is also used by many.

One of the options that has caught my eye is Box.net. This is a web based solution, and is free depending on how much storage you require. The thing that caught my eye though is its integration with the iPhone. Visit their iPhone site (i.box.net) and you can view PDFs and even listen to MP3s right from within Mobile Safari. It all works nice and quick over WiFi, and certainly offers all sorts of opportunities.

The web based interface means the whole thing is nice and intuitive, while also meaning that you can access and upload files from any machine with a browser.

The iPhone interface also couldn’t be any simpler. You’re faced with your files in a list, complete with icons that make each file type instantly recognisable. Tap the file you want and you’re away. I tried both a PDF of the iPhone User Guide and an MP3 I had handy and both downloaded and opened in good time, and worked flawlessly.

All in all, I really like Box.net You could use it to store music and video to save space on your iPhone or iPod Touch should you wish, which could prove useful for anyone who finds they just don’t have enough space for their library.

Do you use any online storage services? Have you found something better than Box.net? Let us know in the comments.

I’ve been using the iPhone version of SMEStorage.com for a while now (www.thesmespace.com/smeutils/msmestorage). As well as getting access to all my files, I can share files over email, create business groups, and access my email backups directly from the iPhone. Also if anyone shares a file with me, I get an SMS as it is integrated with Twitter – this really does allow me to have a remote office capability, even more so as it is now integrated with Zoho Office – very slick…

Sounds interesting Ed, might have to have a look at that. The mobile me service Apple announced today is something that I’ll be keeping my eye on. Wonder if you can download files off iDisk using an iPhone?

I never heard of Box.net but I found the information on their website fascinating. I see that any browser enabled phone can access Box but are the apps only available through IPhone and Blackberry? With more mobiles using the S-Class interface I wonder if this is compatible too?

  4. BOX.net has a great service/site. This is a MUST for any iPhone owner (well other than a spare battery of course ;)
