3G iPhone – Will you be upgrading?
It’s now been 24 hours since we were given the green light for iPhone 3G. All the hype is dying down, as is my pulse ! So, in the cold hard light of day the question is this: will you be throwing out your V1 iPhone in favour of the all-plastic 3G version?
More after the jump.
Me? I’m torn. There’s the tech geek inside me that’s itching to get hold of it (the iPhone that is!). I like new shiny things, and a 3G iPhone certainly fits that bill nicely. The problem though is for once, I think I might just be starting to grow up! First I sold my pride and joy in favour of a nice diesel (car talk, completely off topic but it’ll help set the picture!) and now I’m actually considering NOT buying the most hotly anticipated Apple product since, well, the original iPhone !
Allow me to list my reasons for being a little on the fence:
- My V1 iPhone does everything I need, yeah it could do it faster with access to the 3G portion of my network, but it does still work.
- Looks – I just don’t like that all plastic back. Yes I understand that it was required in order to make the GPS work but still, I just don’t like it. Plus it’s curved. Why? The damn thing will just slide all over my desk !
- Price – Will I need to buy a PAYG handset to get it out of the store without being forced to sign up to a contract? Surely this is the only way they can make subsidising the price work ?
Having said all that, if I can walk into an O2 store on July 11th and hand over shy of £100 for one, I fear that’s exactly what I will be doing. I will, however, be watching the likes of Zibri very closely until then. I’ve got a nice tariff with T-Mobile as it is, and I’ve no intention of being tied down to an 18 month inferior O2 contract !
So with that it’s over to you. I’m very interested to hear what you will be doing. Will you be selling your current iPhone (I know our very own Justin already has) and upgrading, or are you happy with your trusty old handset? Please do let us know in the comments section below !

Me too! Definitely! By my maths its effectively a free upgrade, assuming I sell the old one!
What’s your maths behind that? Is that taking out a new O2 contract?
Can’t justify taking out an 18 month contract for faster internet, and GPS that I won’t use. I only got the iPhone at the start of the price drops (mid April?) and that was the first time I’d browsed the web on a phone. I’ll happily a fair few months before I can justify that expense for quicker web.
What would have made me think twice would have been a considerably improved camera; obviously Apple still think that’s not what the iPhone is about, and that’s okay, but It would be a big selling point for me personally.
Well… for my sins, I’ve been on a £35 a month contract for the last 5 years anway – so to be honest I dont really miss the money going out – obv I’d much prefer to pay less – and we all know that the iPhone tariffs are poo compared to their equivalent ‘normal’ phone tariffs..
From what I gather from reading MW, I can purchase the v2 for £69 and then sell my v1 and make back the money I fork out on the v2..although that does mean that I have to take out a new contract…
Time will tell I spose…
I’m currently on a T-Mobile contract that gets me unlimited data and £120 worth of texts/calls for £37 a month. O2 can’t come close as far as I know.
@Jez, I agree about the camera – its a missed opportunity – but its not a deal breaker..in my eyes at least! I think maybe my predisposition to run out and buy one straight away is just the technogeek on the inside! Anything shiny and new, and emblazoned with the Apple logo is enough to get me reaching for the card!
Definitely gonna get the 3G with O2′s upgrade ‘deal’ whereby they cancel the old contract. Just no idea what to do with the old one yet…tape the two together and have a 16GB iPhone?
I will be, on PAYG. Just waiting for pre-orders now.
