Well it happened. I caved.

This afternoon after work I made the short trip round to the O2 shop where I signed my life away in exchange for a nice shiny black 8Gb iPhone 3G.

The old iPhone’s already in the process of being sold to cover the £176 (No, I don’t know where they get the ’6′ from either!) it will cost to get me out of my old contract with T-Mobile, so if anyone’s interested have a gander over here !

So, am I happy with my upgrade? Yes, yes I am. 3G is noticeably faster than GPRS. I never got to test EDGE as I didn’t have an O2 contract, but I’m led to believe it wasn’t much faster than the standard GPRS connection.

The GPS functionality is nice too, and I suspect it will come into play more once more useful location aware apps become available, something like how OmniFocus works. My only misgiving about the GPS is simply that it will only work when you’re outside. That’s pretty obvious I know, but it’s something worth remembering when deciding whether the upgrade is worth it to you.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to try and find a cheap 3G dock on eBay !

    Congratulations Oli! Black or White?

The jump from T-Mobile’s (recently very slow) GPRS to 3g is good stuff isn’t it?

It’s a black 8Gb. T-Mobile’s GPRS has been appalling of late, which is a shame because I actually like them ! We’ll see how I get on with O2.

  3. Arr! Great bit of kit isn’t it? I never had the v1 but really liked the device, except it was never quite perfect. The 3G resolved all that for me. I am starting to find a few annoyances so far though but nothing major.
