Possible fix for slow SMS keyboard?

Im sure I’m not the only one who’s been having some bugs show up on their lovely new iPhone 3G. The software’s just plain beta-like. It was with great excitement then that I downloaded the 2.0.1 firmware, hoping for some of these bugs to be squashed. And they were. For a while.
One of the more annoying problems for me, is the laggy keyboard when typing a new SMS message. I sent a lot of messages, so this was starting to get on my nerves somewhat. I also NEVER delete old messages. This got me wondering…..
So, after some thinking (and no, it didn’t hurt !) I fired up the SMS app and had a look at the message history for my most used contacts. Sure enough, I found myself scrolling A LONG way before I got to the top.
In case any of you haven’t figured out where I’m going with this yet, I stabbed my sausage fingers at the ‘clear’ button, and watched as the list disappeared. Sure enough, the keyboard suddenly sprang back into life. Pressing keys actually meant a character was typed. Immediately ! I’d not seen that happen in what felt like forever !
Obviously your milage may vary, but something as simple as clearing the messages from a conversation definitely helped me. Is the problem a simple case of not enough RAM to hold a long list of text AND a keyboard at once? Your guess is as good as mine !
I’m very interested to hear if this helps others. Be sure to let me know either on here, or my Twitter presence !

In response to your Twitter, I’ve not tried it yet, but then I’ve not had the problem since seeing your post. I’m waiting for the painfully slow sms entry to rear its head again, then I’m going to try it. Usually I drop out of the SMS app and go back in again it corrects itself. I don’t see constant sluggish texting with the 2.0.1 firmware, it’s very intermittent.
I think the memory theory makes sense - I had Aurora Feint tell me my device was running low on memory the other day. Haven’t seen that message since Windows Mobile!
