Apple invites the press to notebook event, October 14th.

Leaving it as late as they could, Apple has sent out invites today to a special notebook event at their Cupertino campus on October 14th with the headline on the teaser reading “The spotlight turns to notebooks”.

The Apple conference call a few months ago mentioned that the Q3 profits would take a hit, and it would see the introduction of a whole new product line.. but then again there’s also information floating around about the price so I’ve done my best to summarise the rumors to make them easier to digest.

  • Macbook and Macbook Pro to be unified as 1 line with 3 models. Low. Med. High (explains the “new” product line).
  • Each case to be fabricated from a “Brick” of aluminum to eliminate screws / improve appearance (The iBrick rumors have been circulating for a while, this has only recently been suggested as a codename for the production process, but it’s credible)
  • New lower, aggressive price point (as low as $800) for the low end models (explains the profit loss)
  • Production to take place in-house at Apple’s newly acquired factory (just on the outskirts of the HQ campus at 1 infinite Loop)

I would love to see a single simple line that ranges with a low end “Macbook-equivalent” model to a high end “Macbook Pro-equivalent” model that also has the nice middle ground covered (think dedicated graphics, but smaller screen). Then again, I could be wrong and this could be an entirely new tablet / touch based tablet. Who knows? I guess only time will tell.. iPhone countdown timer set.
