A few days ago I posted about a Terminal command that allowed users to customize how OS X handles a machine going to sleep. The method worked, but wasn’t the most elegant of solutions. Reader ‘der Dennis’ wrote in the comments about a PrefPane alternative called SmartSleep so I tootled off to the appropriate web site for a look-see.

To recap, I wanted a way to stop my MacBook from writing the contents of RAM to the HDD, making the process of putting the machine to sleep a little quicker. SmartSleep gives you a few options for managing this, all in a nice GUI that won’t scare people away like Terminal.

SmartSleep is free, and works a treat. Download now !
