5 Palm (P)Reviews

So, boys and girls, it’s here.

After months of waiting, Palm has finally released it’s proposed iPhone killer upon the world. Will this little wonder cause Apple sleepless nights or is it just another pretender? I’ve thrown together a list of 5 reviews, along with a little excerpt, for your reading pleasure.

My thoughts after reading ? If this thing had the App Store, I’d be having one.

But the multitouch! I can’t tell if it’s because there’s a better CPU backing it up, or a better digitizer, or if it’s just better software, but the touch is more accurate, more responsive and just plain better than the iPhone’s. The invention of a ripple effect where you press the screen is genius, and goes partway to solving the chronic problem of passive feedback—whether or not the OS knows you’ve pressed the screen. I say partway, since the phone occasionally still doesn’t register your clicks, even when the ripple appears.

The Telegraph

The Pre ticks all the boxes needed for a modern smartphone – WiFi and 3G connectivity, web browser, YouTube access, 8GB of memory, app store for downloading games and programs, Amazon MP3 access for song downloads, three-megapixel camera with flash (although, curiously, no video-recording function; this inspired-by-Apple thing is going too far), accelerometer for switching between portrait and landscape, etc etc.

Boy Genius

Keyboard: It’s really not good. My hands aren’t that big (I can type faster than you could ever dream on a BlackBerry, iPhone or E71) and my thumb literally takes up 3 or 4 keys on the keyboard. There’s less space in between each key than say, a BlackBerry Curve 8300 keyboard, and the texture takes some time to get used to. It’s a rubberized coating kind of like the Centro and Treo Pro, and while the keys are a bit harder (better), the coating could possibly get irritating as usage increases. It’s really such an important area that couldn’t afford to be messed with and we’ll admit it… we’re a little let down. You’re going after the big guns here, and this is kind of disappointing.

Engadget

The Palm Pre. It’s not just a phone, it’s a myth, an idea, possibly a legacy… and a really, really long time coming. It’s almost impossible to believe, but the crew at Engadget has been talking about a Linux-based Palm phone since way back in 2004. Through the now-distant years that followed, we were speculating, pontificating, and wishfully-thinking about a new device from a company that we’d come to expect innovation from. But we waited. And waited. And waited.
