Everyone’s talking about Google Wave these days, whether they be slating it, or asking for invites. One thing that seems to get covered over and over, is a question: What IS Google Wave for ?

The most common line coming out of Google is a confusing one. They say Google is what email would be if it was invented today (did you know email is 40 years old?). This causes its own problems, but plenty of people have written better posts about that than I ever could. I’m sure a swift search for ‘google wave’ will sort you out there.

In my search for more info I came across a delightful YouTube video, and I’ve imbedded it below for your viewing pleasure.

On a related note, I had my invite come through today. Many, many thanks to Marco Pifferi for sorting me out there.
I’ve used Wave for all of an hour so far, so obviously I’m not the all-knowing source of info, but so far I’m fairly impressed. It looks to be more than an email replacement, and I think that comparison will only hurt it in the sort term. One problem I have encountered is Wave does seem to pull your browser into a spiral of death. Beach balls in Safari on my MacBook are commonplace when using Wave. Obviously though, you have to remember this is beta alpha stage software, so I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt here.

I’ll keep trying it over the coming days and try to post more about it after that.

Are you in on the Google Wave fun ? Let me know how you’re finding the experience, and I’d particularly like to know what you’re using it for !

(disclaimer – this post was written with one hell of a headache, so if none of it makes sense, blame the pain killers !)
