There has been plenty of discussion about the iPhone 4 and its odd cellular behaviour. The ‘left handed reception issue’ aside, I’m finding the handset keeps dropping its service connection on a regular basis, but I *hope* it’s fixable in software.

According to people far smarter than me, a potential update could change the way the iPhone handles poor reception and what it does with it. I’m told it is taking too long to switch to a different frequency or possibly isn’t switching at all. At this point the iPhone will tell you it had no signal, and then try again.

I’m hoping this is the case, and here’s why.

I’m currently sat in my back garden, trying desperately to not melt into a pool of my own perspiration I have 3 bars if EDGE reception. I stand up and make one step forward. Instantly I have no bars, and then no signal. 10 seconds later I’m back to 2 bars again. I’ve gone nowhere, and I’m fairly certain the cell mast hadn’t either.

Now, that does sound similar to what I described earlier, but I’m no expert. With a bit if luck we’ll get an OS update shortly and we’ll know one and for all – is it software or hardware?

I’ve not even been able to force replicate this issue once. The phone has had a much better signal than my old 3G, no matter how I hold it. :S
